New Year's skincare resolutions

I know that it is just a day like any other, but I can't help feeling January 1st is the perfect moment to make fresh starts! If you are anything like me, you'll have a few bad habits you've been meaning to deal with - so why not now?

Makeup for Christmas Day

Christmas is not only days away and along with doing some festive baking and crafts, I'm also excited to wear very Christmassy makeup! Given it only comes once a year, I like to make sure that my makeup is really special.

A note on hot cloth cleansing and cleansing cloths

I would say the "hot cloth" method is the most widely approved approach to cleansing in the skincare sphere, and I for one am a convert. However, I just thought I'd quickly outline some things I've picked up since cleansing this way - basically, so you don't repeat the same mistakes I made.

Essie's "On A Silver Platter"

If there is one time of year to go all out on your nails, it would most certainly be Christmas!

Going without foundation

My skin for the most part is pretty good, with the odd blemish. It's recently dawned on me that I probably don't need as much product on my face as I use and that I most likely don't require quite so much coverage.

This has gotten me into thinking about how to get away with no foundation, especially as it can be such a faff to apply in summer.

A focus on cleansers

I really like cleansing my face. That may sound odd to some, but I like having freshly washed skin and getting all the products, makeup and general dirt off my face after a long day out.

I'm currently using three cleansers and I'm really enjoying each of them.

Products for moisturising your hair when it's dry

I'm not sure if the slightly convoluted title of this post conveys what I mean. We are all very familiar with nourishing products applied when the hair is just washed and damp, but recently I've also been loving moisturising my hair when it is completely dry.

A new lipstick love

Recently, I've been eschewing bright lipstick for a more natural look. Enter a Lisa Eldridge tutorial inspired by Downton Abbey - featuring Lady Edith herself - and I'm off immediately to buy her latest lipstick recommendation.

The "just in case" products

When I wrote about the four products that never leave my handbag, it got me thinking - what are the products I can't live without in my bathroom? Obviously, there are my foundations, my cleanser, my mascara, but I automatically thought of those products that, although you mightn't use them regularly, are always somewhere for me to use at a moment's notice. Call them the emergency, life saving products in my collection.

Stila Convertible Colour

I had been a powder blush girl for basically ever (I had had a brief dalliance with a cream product that would last about 2 minutes on my face) before trying the Convertible Colour. But despite my apprehensions, this cream blush presently surprised me.

What's on my wishlist

The 4 items that never leave my makeup bag

If I don't have these products on me constantly, I tend to feel a little ill at ease. I use these at least once a day, usually more frequently, and they're staples for me when I'm on the go.

Creating a Long-Lasting Base

There are some days where a bit of tinted moisturiser and a coat of mascara can get you through. There are others, however, where you're out from the crack of dawn and don't get home til midnight -  it is these days where you need your makeup to go the distance. Especially as the weather is getting warmer, it's important to make a good base so you don't discover at 10:30am that your foundation has already completely disappeared.

Spring go-to nail polishes

I like to reflect the seasons in what I wear, and there are few easier, cheaper or quicker ways to do so than with nail polish. Here are four of the nail polishes that have been getting me excited recently for the warmer weather!

I went through a phase of wearing red lipstick almost every day for about 18 months. Whilst I don't don a red lip half as much these days, I still have some fail-safe favourites I alway go back to.

The Balm's Mary-Lou Manizer

The Balm's Mary-Lou Manizer (said "Mary Luminizer", for those, like me, that didn't pick up on the word play) is my first product from the Balm and, well, it's love. This beautiful powder highlighter is just shimmery enough to give a good glow, but not so much to come off disco-ball-y.

My favourite non-traditional sunscreens

Sunscreens have progressed in leaps and bounds in the past couple of years. Gone are the days of gloopy, thick layers of cream - we now have a whole host of light, high-tech products offering high SPF.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Tinted Fluid

I had tried another version of this product earlier this year, but had been put off by the spray-on format – I found it inappropriate for daily use, but liked the formula itself. I had seen the tinted fluid raved about recently and remembered it particularly because of the unusual bottle shape. When my trusty Neutrogena Ultra Sheer ran out, I decided to give it a try.

Power duo: Indeed Laboratories’ Hydraluron + Origins’ GinZing Energy-boosting moisturizer

Have you ever been so unlucky as to experience those little balls of rolled up product from when too many layers of skincare have been applied? I’m unsure if there is a technical name for this phenomenon, but it’s not a pretty sight. Having had this occur previously, I’d been reluctant to use more than one or two products in my morning skincare routine, sticking with a light sunscreen and moisturizer.

How to grow and maintain long, healthy hair

Growing your hair long is a waiting game, certainly. Anyone patient enough can have waist-length hair after a certain period, if so desired. However, there are a few steps I wouldn’t miss to help your locks along, and once you’ve reached the ideal length, to keep them in tip-top shape.

Looking good while working out: a guide to makeup at the gym

Makeup at the gym is a tricky area to navigate - some are totally against it, while others cannot be in public without a full face on. In my opinion, the best approach is somewhere in between - wear some makeup, but not too much. Here are my tips on getting it right.

Nails and how not to go insane while painting them

There a few things I like more than perfectly painted nails, and few things I hate more than spending 90 minutes painting them. Life is hard, isn’t it? To combat this, I’ve been through periods of getting shellac, followed by spending several hours chipping my nails off when the colour begins to chip. Getting my nails professionally manicured weekly is a nice idea, but is a pricey indulgence. I have resigned myself to my fate – learning to enjoy the process of doing my nails. Here are my top tips:

Nuxe Paris: The Essentials Collection

Nuxe has long been a brand of interest to me – many of my favourite bloggers espouse their “Reve de Miel” as the best lip treatment on the market. Having never tried any of the offerings, I thought their “indispensables” (The Essentials) collection would be a good start.

Ojon Damage Reverse Restorative Shampoo and Conditioner, and Rare Blend Hair Oil

In these times of ‘no poo’ and ‘co-washing’, it is controversial to admit that I wash my hair every two days. I need to – I always seem to be running about, exercising and making my hair so oily that not even the best dry shampoo can make a dent. Perhaps I need to grit my teeth and train my scalp to secrete less oil by washing less – one day I will have the self discipline, but for now, my routine is going to stay the same.

How NOT to fix a broken powder compact

Whether we are talking bronzer, blush, mattifying powders or eyeshadows, it is incredibly frustrating to have a makeup product smash and crumble. You can try and resurrect the product as a loose powder, or you might resolve to throw it out. But what if you can easily bring the powder back to its former glory, and make it a pressed powder once more?
