Sali Hughes Pretty Honest: The Straight-Talking Beauty Companion

I don't want to give too much of the content away, but I'd like to just urge you all to go out and purchase Sali Hughes' book Pretty Honest: The Straight-Talking Beauty Companion.

For those who were unaware, Sali is the beauty writer for British newspaper the Guardian, and also has a wonderful blog and Youtube. She is straight to the point, opinionated and honest, and also incredibly elegant and charming. I have watched most of her videos, including wonderful interviews she has done with Bobbi Brown and Caitlin Moran. She has fast become someone whose advice I can trust absolutely and wholeheartedly.

Her book is a treasure trove of timeless advice. It is beautifully and concisely written, and made me laugh out loud more than once. It breaks down the basics - buying foundation and daily skincare, for example - but also covers more particular beauty topics. Sali talks about beauty for new mothers and beauty in times of illness, which are largely unaddressed by most in the field. I particularly enjoyed the chapters about dealing with pushy counter staff, salon etiquette and perfumes.

Pretty Honest is a wonderful resource for beginners, but I also would not discount its use for those with a seasoned interest in beauty. I will definitely be turning to her more specialist chapters that, while not being of use to me at present, may be one day (like how to look vaguely reasonable with a newborn). In short, it is a beauty reference book that I will always have on my shelves.

Sali Hughes' Pretty Honest: The Straight-Talking Beauty Companion is available here at Amazon.
