Goals for 2016

As it's New Years Eve, it is customary to outline a few resolutions for the incoming year and I, for one, am very excited for 2016 to start. 2015 has been a lot of hard work and in all, a good 365 days, but there are a few things I would have loved to achieved this year that I'm adamant about getting done in the next.

The Queen of eye makeup removers

I can't say that eye makeup remover is the most glamorous product housed in my bathroom cupboards, but it's undeniably a cornerstone of my evening skincare routine. Whilst some favour a simple face cleanser all over, I always rely on an eye-specific product to avoid too much pulling and rubbing around the delicate eye area.

A few Christmas traditions

As someone who is very festive year-round, Christmas is my most favourite time of the year. There are so many beautiful traditions that I adore - cosy decorations, old-time carols, the foods you eat one a year (why aren't mince pies perennial? Can we make a petition please) and spending time with loved ones.
I always want to make the absolute most of it all and I must say that this year I've certainly done my all to do just that. There's no such thing as Christmas overkill in my books.

Wishlist of the season

Christmastime is a primetime for crafting one's wishlist, what with the plethora of festive packaging and gift sets offered in the beauty halls, alongside the impending Boxing Day sales. I've been restrained all year and have been working pretty hard of late, so I feel I can justify splashing out on a few items I've been coveting for months.

Body brushing

Body brushing has been on my radar for a few years, since hearing that Miranda Kerr swears by it daily. If you're not familiar, it involves taking a large bristle brush and brushing your dry skin.

Nail polish combinations for fingers and toes

In her book 'Pretty Honest', Sali Hughes said that life is too short to have matching nail polish on your fingers and toes. While I find having one colour on both can satisfy my Type-A self, in some situations it is boring or inappropriate - notably, while nudes are elegant on fingertips, they tend to make feet look pasty and corpse-like. As a general rule, I like pairing bright toe polish with more sophisticated colours on my hands. Here are a few of my favourite fingers/toes combinations...

Soap and Glory: some favourite buys

Soap and Glory is a wonderful brand and one I fear doesn't get enough attention here in Australia. In its native UK, it's sold widely in Boots, whilst on Australian shores, a reduced range of products is stocked at Kit.

October Nails

Oh, October - where days can still be cold and wet, yet summer is undeniably on its ways. Being in between seasons can be difficult, notably when I have my annual debate as to when is too soon to change to summer bedding and pyjamas (life's hard sometimes). In a way, though, it gives me the freedom to wear wintery dark polishes followed by bright colours, while feeling entirely seasonal. Here's what adorned my nails this month:

Lisa Eldridge's Face Paint: a comprehensive history of makeup

If you're in the market for a new beauty read, you're in luck - Lisa Eldridge has just released her first book, Face Paint. Unlike many other beauty books on the market, it's not a 'how-to' book, but a fascinating insight into the history of making-up one's face, across many millennia and civilisations.

Blogs to read to improve your french

I'd say I've got a fairly good level of French (thanks in no small part to my boyfriend, Thibault, who is constantly helping me, correcting my conjugations and explaining the passé simple for the umpteenth time). That being said, I'm still learning (probably always will be), and one way I like to do so is by reading Francophone blogs. There is, of course, an appropriate time for serious study, but it's always more enjoyable when you're reading about Caudalie face mists than from out of a textbook, isn't it?

Sunday appropriate makeup

Sundays are jut not the day to sport a full face of makeup. Ideally, you should have a day once a week without makeup to let your skin have a break. However, things come up and you've got a brunch date with a friend or a family catchup, and you can't leave the house completely bare-faced.

Trilogy Rosehip Oil Antioxidant+

For most of my life, I've steered clear of facial oils as up until a few years ago, I had adolescent, breakout-prone skin and using heavy oils was the last thing on my mind. Living in Australia also didn't help, as given the high temperatures for a good part of the year, skin doesn't need the extra moisturisation that might be required in dryer, cooler climes.

Making body lotion a habit

I think, universally, moisturising the body is one of the most maligned and neglected parts of the beauty routine. More often than not when we get out of the shower, we don't want to stand in the cold waiting for lotion to sink in. But it's one of those things you have to do to keep your skin hydrated and healthy.

Beauty supplements I take daily

I've been intrigued by supplements since I was young as they seemed to promise to make you healthier, stronger, prettier, more energised and more in one little pill. I know now a lot of what is on the pharmacy shelves has only minimal effect and that most of your nutrition should come from food - that being said, I don't always eat a perfect, varied diet and there are some supplements I take to top me up. Beauty is as much about what you put into your body as what you put on it, so luckily these supplements bring a host of aesthetic benefits as well. Here's a peek into my pillbox...

How to use dry shampoo properly

In my attempt to wash my hair less frequently to get it in better nick, I've been relying more and more on dry shampoo to get me through greasier hair days. I've learned that if not used correctly, dry shampoo can do absolutely nothing or at worst, make your hair feel grittier and dirtier than it did before. So I've gathered a few tips I've found that help me get the most out my dry shampoo, and give me clean, soft locks every time.

Where to go for online health and fitness inspiration

I joined a new gym a few weeks ago and so have been in desperate need of motivation. What with severely sore muscles, not being able to do stairs for days after going back to BodyPump, and feeling a lot more tired, my initial enthusiasm wore off somewhat. Luckily, there are a whole host of websites and social media accounts that provide a much needed dose of inspiration that I know I can rely on.

September nails

Nail polish is my biggest beauty weakness and was my 'gateway' into makeup  - years before I was wearing mascara or lipstick, I had amassed a decent stash of nail colour. I don't much change my makeup look throughout the year, so I like to reflect the seasons and celebrations through my nails. It's my way of "teaming with the theme", as Kath Day-Knight so astutely put it.

As it's spring now, I can't resist finally using brighter colours and pastels after a winter of grey and wine-coloured varnishes. Here is a snapshot of my nails of the past month.

My ball makeup

Saturday evening, I had my faculty ball, where everyone gets to together for a wonderful night of dancing and socialising. It was such a wonderful evening, and I was especially excited as it was the first formal event that Thibault and I attended together.

It must be said though that one of the best parts (perhaps my favourite) is getting ready for the ball. It's one of the few occasions of the year that you can permit yourself hours to perfect your makeup and hair and given I love the ritual of getting ready, it truly is a joy for me.

Beauty habits: longer nails

Up until recently, I couldn't bear having long nails - as soon as they passed my fingernails, I'd just have to chop them off. They tend to get in the way and make a lot of things - kneading bread, opening containers, using lip balm from pots - much more difficult.

Bad to the bronze - the budget eye shadow for blue eyes

If you've ever read an article about what colours you should wear for your eye colour, you'd know that bronze is touted as a perfect match for blue eyes. Perhaps because of this, and because of my soft-spot for goldy colours, I've acquired a decent collection of bronze eyeshadows.

My shoes of the moment

It's always exciting when you can get your hands on what your favourite UK bloggers are wearing, so I was over the moon when I found these snakeskin flats at Topshop.

I'd seen Tijan Serena sporting them a few months ago (see here!) and had been hopeful we'd get them here, too. They are very similar to the Aquazzura Christy flats, albeit far less expensive. They're so comfortable yet chic and I think the snakeskin adds a point of interest to a basic denim shift dress, or jeans and a t-shirt.

The Kingdom Snake-Effect Ghillie Pointed Flats from Topshop are available online and in stores now.

What's in my handbag? Shopping in the city

Packing the perfect handbag to accompany you out shopping is a fine art. You don't want to bring too much and have to lug about a heavy handbag along with your shopping. But you don't want to be under prepared either. Here are my handbag essentials!

New hair resolutions

Recently, I got a few inches chopped off my hair which prompted a bit of a re-think about how I treat my hair. I'd gone far too long without a cut because I didn't want to lose the length, but it was in a pretty dismal state by the end - very dry, splitting and brittle.

Now that my hair is looking a bit better, I've resolved to change up a few things in my haircare routine to get it back to good health.

Nail polishes every girl should own

Few things make me feel more elegant than a good manicure.  That being said, there are certain shades I gravitate towards depending on the occasion or my mood, and they form my essential nail 'wardrobe'.

A few new makeup pieces

I thought I'd sit down and chat about some products that have made their way into my makeup routine over the past couple of weeks. I'm still testing out these items so I've only got a limited idea of what they're like, but I have a feeling that some of them might become firm favourites. I should imagine you'll be seeing them on my blog sometimes soon with a more educated look at what they are like, and whether you should add them to your shopping list.

How to get free beauty products through recycling empty ones

I try my hardest to be responsible with what I throw out and I do my best to recycle where I can. This means washing out empty makeup, skincare and haircare containers and popping them in the recycling (according to what they're made of, of course!)

However, I've been discovering more and more companies of late that you can give back empty containers to and will reward you for doing so.

My running playlist

I've decided that I want to talk about health and fitness more on this blog, because in my eyes they are an integral part of 'beauty', alongside makeup, skincare, haircare, and so forth. If you're looking to sweat out impurities from your skin, get a boost of circulation, reduce stress and anxiety (both of which are rubbish for your skin), exercise is what you need.

January 2015 Empties

Finishing up products is such a liberating feeling and what better time to do a good clear out than the beginning of the year? I’m trying to make a conscious effort to use up older products that I’ve been neglecting and keep my collection streamlined. Not sure how well I’ll go, but at least I’m making an effort.

Evening skincare routine - January 2015

Morning skincare routine - January 2015

Back in August, I went through my morning skincare routine, but given it’s been a fair few months since that post, I thought it high time to give a little update. You’ll notice that my summer skincare regimen is a lot lighter on with products than in winter. I find that using too many products in warmer weather makes makeup sit badly and not stay as long.

Why I sleep with an eye mask

I did try for a while to not sleep on my stomach so as to reduce my face wrinkling when pushed against the sheets, as described here, but to be totally honest, I didn't get very far. I just can't seem to kick the habit, it seems. If you, like myself, must sleep on your stomach, might I suggest buying a silk eye mask?

Beauty products for your gym bag

I've previously covered how to look good while working out, but I thought it might be nice to have a sneak peek into what beauty products never leave my bag when I'm at the gym. I often have very limited time between exercising and having to dash off to work or uni, so I rely on a set of hard working products to get me looking presentable again in a matter of minutes.

A love letter To blue nail polishes

Ever since I first started wearing nail polish approximately 6 years ago, I've always gravitated towards blue shades. I don't know why as I tend to be quite girly in the way I dress, but I've always found blue nails beautiful and many of my go-to shades tend to be in that colour family.
