In praise of brown eyeliner

When I first started wearing makeup in my teens, I gravitated towards products that gave the most impact - think bold red lips, green eyeshadow and thick black liquid liner. Which I imagine is a common scenario for many young girls who, upon first discovering the myriad of products available, find it easiest to stick with those that give the most immediate and obvious impact.

It is only in recent years that I get excited about more understated makeup options, from my beloved Chanel Boy lipstick to pale beige eyeshadow. I first eschewed brown eye pencils, thinking it to be a bit of a waste of time compared to the drama of black liner, but since a friend purchased MAC's Teddy Eye Kohl for me, I've been a convert.

It's somewhere between a bronze and a chocolate brown with a very slight gold shimmer, which I'd imagine is universally flattering. It thickens and smokes out the lash line so subtly you'd be forgiven for thinking it was natural. While an Audrey Hepburn-esque cat eye remains a reference for sophisticated makeup, brown liner is equally chic in a natural, Clémence Poésy style. And although applying liquid liner is a high-stakes affair, kohl is more forgiving and mistakes can be blended out seamlessly and painlessly.

I've still got black liners aplenty for when the mood strikes, but in short: brown eyeliner is now an integral part of my everyday makeup. I'd love to hear how your makeup preferences have evolved over time, and any kohl liner recommendations as well.
