Two tips for healthier nails

Late last year, my nails were in a sorry state. I'd applied polish without giving my bare nails a breather  one too many times, and found myself with flaky, yellowing nails that chipped easily - not very chic. I've since spent more energy properly looking after my nails and discovered two steps in my routine that are indispensable to a perfect manicure.



Tip one: ditch the nail polish remover pots

I'll never forget my reaction when I first discovered those little pots of nail polish remover that promise to dissolve the varnish in one dip - I thought they were utterly brilliant. And they are, to some extent, as they are quicker and more convenient than using remover on cotton pads. But in using them, you are drenching your nails in much more acetone than you would normally, which in turn damages the nails. I've seen a major improvement in my nails since I gave up the pot-style removers and I urge you to do the same.


Tip two: treat your hands overnight 

After I remove my polish, I like to wait a few days until I put on the next colour and those nights, I use a couple of products to nourish my nails while I sleep. I first use a rich hand cream (my current choice is Nuxe's Rêve de Miel Hand and Nail Cream), then I coat my nails in Dior's Crème Abricot - a thick, apricot-scented balm. I pop on a pair of cotton gloves for the night and by morning, my hands are much softer.

These two steps have worked a treat and my nails are back in very fine shape!
