3 ways to up your skincare game this winter

The change of seasons is the perfect time to create routines and break old habits - I like to monopolise on this state of flux to introduce new things into my life. Given that those of us in the Southern Hemisphere are just days away from winter, it seemed like the perfect occasion for me to share some new, easy tips - nothing too tricky or fiddly - that you could integrate into your skincare regimen to take it up a notch. Although these ideas are aimed at caring for your skin during the colder months, they are more broadly just excellent habits to get into year-round. Start now, and your skin will thank you for it come summertime.

1. Don't forget sun protection

Just because it's no longer boiling outside from dawn to dusk doesn't mean you can skimp on the SPF - the sun can do damage perennially. In fact, winter is the perfect time to start getting in the habit of applying sunscreen every single day, as it's much less of a chore; you've got a far smaller amount of exposed skin to cover (especially if you, like me, also dress like an eskimo when it's cold). If you prefer a light-weight, matte finish, my favourite is La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Fluid 50+ - I've tried loads of sunscreens and I've yet to find a formulation I prefer to this one.

2. Introduce a hydrating serum

While in the warmer months, I can get by with just a rich moisturiser in the day; but my skin feels tight without an extra layer of hydration when the temperature drops. I'm now on my second bottle of Hylamide SubQ Anti-Age Advanced Serum, which contains high levels of hyaluronic acid that helps boost the skin's hydration. It's a very thin serum that dries almost instantly - I slot it in before my SPF in the morning and I'm good to go in minutes.

3. Remove your makeup as soon as you can

This is easier in winter, when we tend to stay at home more in the evening so I can get stuck into my beauty routine much earlier (although I'm a huge homebody every month of the year). I know that my skin looks particularly glowy and clear after a few days makeup-free, and this is just an extension of this idea. Not only is it good to get your evening cleanse out of the way early on, but you can also then massage in a lovely face oil a few times throughout the evening - whenever I do this layering with oil, my skin feels so soft and looks great, and I feel wonderfully pampered.

How are you looking to improve your skincare routine this winter? Are you introducing some changes?
