Bedside beauty

If you're anywhere near as nosy as I am, I'm sure you're a frequent reader of articles where people divulge the beauty contents of their bathroom cabinets or handbags (case in point: I'm going to Europe in just over a month and I've already been watching "What's in my carry-on luggage" videos on repeat for weeks.*) So I thought you might enjoy a tour of the drawers of my bedside table for a sneaky peek at some of my pre-bedtime favourites.

Some recent favourites

I felt as though after my recent blogging hiatus, it made the most sense to jump back into things with a recent favourites roundup. Every so often over the past few months I've thought to myself, "I must mention this on the blog!" - so here they are ...

Teas for dreaming about the colder months

Much of my social media timelines are currently filled with Northern Hemisphere residents excitedly grasping at any sign of spring's arrival, from cheering daffodils and mimosa bouquets, to longer days and brighter evenings. Here in Australia, we are slowly heading into the cooler months and I am impatient for the end of summer and its blistering heat - yet we're currently in the first week of autumn* and the forecast is predicting temperatures of above 35°c. To console myself, I've put together a list of some of my favourite wintery teas to remind myself that the cold, and all the loveliness it brings with it, is not far away, and to wish for autumn's swift arrival.

French Sole: my new ballet flat loves

Most days, you'll probably find me sporting a pair of ballet flats - they're comfortable, feminine, go with almost everything and instantly make any outfit more polished. I've been a fan of Repetto for many years and still have a few staple pairs in my collection, but as soon as I heard about French Sole I was eager to try out their offerings. French Sole ballet flats have graced the feet of Princess Diana, the Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa Middleton, while Olivia Palermo and Kate Moss are also big fans. Alice Naylor-Leyland and Rosie Fortescue (of Made in Chelsea fame) also have designed collections for them which I am very tempted by (look at these sweet slippers!). So I put in an order as a Christmas present to myself and am absolutely smitten with my shoes.

Beauty hacks for when you're in a rush

If you've been around here a little while, you might remember that I put up a post about beauty hacks you can accomplish in five minutes or less a few months back. Well, I decided to elaborate upon the subject a bit today and have got a new video for you about some speedy, fuss-free beauty "hacks" - because sometimes you just need something quick and easy to make you feel a bit more presentable.
Let me know if you have any particular video requests and please subscribe if you have yet to do so.

Ladies Like Us by Alena Kate Pettitt: the finishing school for modern ladies

Sometimes I stumble across something that I wish I'd known when I was younger - some idea or advice that I know would have helped guide or inspire me when I was a teenager, when I was much more impressionable and unsure than I am now. I recently read Ladies Like Us by Alena Kate Pettitt and regret only that I hadn't had it available to me aged 13, when I was lost as to the type of person I wanted to become.

Some favourite apps

This is going to be a very short post - although I've teasingly titled it "favourite apps", there are really only three that I'm really excited about. My phone is pretty light on apps as a general rule and the rest are a very stock standard mix of social media and the native apps that come with the phone. That being said, I thought it still worth the while to tell you about three apps I love and that I find interesting in the hope that you'll share your favourites with me - as with all things, the best finds are usually from personal recommendations.

What I bought in the Priceline skincare sale

One of my most anticipated sales is the 40% off skincare sale at Priceline, Australia's foremost drugstore. As it only happens twice a year, I stock up on a lot while I'm there - and to be honest, I could have done worse but I was fairly restrained! I had been adding to my list of what to buy for a few months and thankfully, I got everything I had wanted before it sold out - we did get there as soon as the shop opened at 9am though, so I'm not too surprised. I thought I'd round up what I got in order to show the bits I always repurchase as well as some new finds (and potential gems).

My mother's beauty loves

Given I spend my time on here talking about my beauty favourites, it's only fair that I also give credit to those who have helped to shape my beauty tastes. No one has been so influential on my love of beauty as my mother, Sabina, who I have convinced to run me through some of her favourite products, both skincare and makeup. She is incredibly knowledgeable about beauty and I am so pleased to be able to share some of her favourites with you today.

What's in my makeup bag

I'm back again today with another video - hurray! This time talking about all the bits and pieces I keep in my makeup bag for when I'm on the go. I'd also like to thank you all for your kind and encouraging comments about my first video last week (it's about my body care favourites - it's here if you haven't seen it yet!) as they truly have helped me feel much more confident making this week's video. I hope that you enjoy and I look forward to seeing you next week!

4711: The perfect (and affordable) summer scent

On really hot days in high summer, there are few perfumes I really want to wear. While a scent may be fine when in the air-conditioned comforts of one's home or office, many inevitably become overbearing and headachy if worn outside on a 40°c day. A few exceptions I routinely reach for are Jo Malone's Blackberry and Bay and Byredo's Bal d'Afrique, both of which seem to come into their own in the searing heat. To this list I add my newest favourite, 4711.

Body care favourites - and a Youtube video!

I'm so, so pleased to be writing this post as I've finally kept my promise and have made my first Youtube video! Well, I say first - about 18 months ago I made a few videos but they weren't on the camera I'm using now and the quality was very poor (I've made these videos private for now). I'm very excited about Youtube as it's an opportunity to make different and exciting content to what I've been doing on my blog. As you'll see from the video, I'm far from perfect - the angle isn't ideal, I say "as well" about a billion times - but I'm learning and will no doubt improve with every video. I aim to make a video a week, which I feel is a comfortable goal to set for the moment, with the hope of making videos more frequently in the future. Please feel free to give me feedback and ideas - all would be much appreciated. And happy watching!

Some favourite new bloggers and YouTubers from 2016

Despite being a bit of a Luddite in most respects, I'm very much a millennial when it comes to the entertainment I consume - I watch loads of YouTube videos on a daily basis and find them a constant source of knowledge and entertainment. So it's always a joy when I discover or am recommended new people or blogs that I can binge watch and read. I thought I'd put together a few that I've started to enjoy in 2016 in the hope that you'll like them, too - I can't wait to find whose channel or blog I'll be obsessed with in 2017!

My current favourite moisturiser duo

As I've progressed from my teens into my twenties, I've noticed a marked change in my skin - before I could go without moisturiser, but nowadays my skin is tight and dull without a slick of cream. While it was initially alarming to realise this, it's actually been a good opportunity for me to try out new products and judge them on their merits, whereas I previously didn't have to think twice about how well what I was putting on my face was working. Recently, I've been getting through loads of different moisturisers but I've settled on these two beauties as my preferred products of the moment.

December favourites

Although we're now bounding into 2017, today I've rounded up my favourites of the last month of 2016 as a way of farewelling the past year. I had a lot more spare time in December so I relished researching, purchasing and trying out some new products; this month's best of list is a mix of some more recent favourites, alongside some rediscovered gems. It's also started to get quite hot in Australia (as I write this, it is currently 41°c outside, help me) and so naturally I've started using a few products that are a bit more appropriate to the current weather. I might do a summer essentials post if you're interested, so do let me know.
