Ladies Like Us by Alena Kate Pettitt: the finishing school for modern ladies

Sometimes I stumble across something that I wish I'd known when I was younger - some idea or advice that I know would have helped guide or inspire me when I was a teenager, when I was much more impressionable and unsure than I am now. I recently read Ladies Like Us by Alena Kate Pettitt and regret only that I hadn't had it available to me aged 13, when I was lost as to the type of person I wanted to become.

Ladies Like Us is a guide to being a modern lady and a very comprehensive guide at that. I've read similar books in the past that touch only on clothing, or focus exclusively on how to have correct manners which, while enjoyable, only provide part of the picture. Ladies Like Us however covers all components of what it means to be ladylike - from spirituality and work, to presentation and poise. Each chapter is thorough and instructive, giving easily applicable steps as to how to incorporate Alena's advice into your life.

I believe that every woman will find something that will resonate particularly with her in Ladies Like Us. While the chapters on alcohol and partying didn't apply to me personally (I'm pretty much a teetotaling homebody if I'm honest), they were still worth learning from in order for me to understand others better or to offer help if needed. I found the advice on goals and poise the most relevant to my life in my current situation - although as you can see by the extensive tabbing I've done of my copy, there was a lot I read on a variety of topics that I wanted to remember for later.

I first heard about Alena and her brand, the Darling Academy, through one of my favourite blogs, What Would Kate Do?, which chronicles the life and fashion of the Duchess of Cambridge. It's fitting, really, as Catherine is truly the embodiment of a modern lady, one of the many reasons that I look up to her as a role model. Ladies Like Us draws inspiration from Catherine and many other wonderful women to provide a guide to emulating their poise and their elegance. Although I'm no longer 13, it's little matter - I was still so inspired by Ladies Like Us and I know that women of all ages will find guidance and encouragement within its pages.

I look forward to seeing more from Alena and in the meantime, please do follow her on Twitter and Facebook - she truly is a darling herself.
